An honest wood cutter and the axe
Once there lived a
woodcutter in a village. The village was near a deep forest. The woodcutter was
very poor but honest. The forest was on the bank of a deep river. One day while
cutting wood his iron axe fell from his hand into water. Then a wonderful thing
happened. A beautiful fairy appeared before the wood cutter while he was crying
bitterly. The fairy wanted to know about the reason of his crying and the
woodcutter told her about the sad incident. Hearing this, the fairy took pity
on him and also decided to test his honesty. She dived into the deep water of
the river, bought one gold axe and asked him. “Is this your axe?”
“No.” replied the honest wood cutter. The fairy again dived into the water and brought a silver axe. The man did not accept the silver axe and also said that it was not his own axe. The fairy went into the water for the third time and she returned with his real iron axe. This time the wood cutter became very glad and cried out. “It’s mine!” the fairy became pleased with him and gave him all the three axes as reward for his honesty.
