A cook and his master

                                                             A cook and his master

A clever cook and his ready wit

A cook once roasted a duck for his master. The roast looked so delicious that the cook could not resist the temptation and ate up one of the drumsticks. When the master sat down to eat, he quickly noticed the missing of the leg and asked him about the other leg. The cook told him that the duck has only one leg. The master was not to be fooled and so said that there was no such thing as one legged duck. The cook insisted that the duck had one leg only. The master was very annoyed. At that moment the cook looked out of the window and saw that one of the ducks was standing one one leg and had the other leg folded inside. He drew the attention of his master and showed him that some ducks have indeed one leg. The master clapped his hands loudly and the duck put down the other leg as well and ran off. At that time the master looked at the cook and the cook said that the master was right after all. If he had known this trick, he would have clapped his hands too before cooking to bring out the other leg. Hearing this , the master was very much amused.

A rich man and a happy cobbler

There lived a happy cobbler who passed his days working and singing from morning till night.A rich neighbor of him was a banker who one day said to him, "How much a year do you earn?"

The cobbler laughed and said, "I earn enough to make both ends meet." The rich man said, "I think you are in great distress." The cobbler said, "I am happy to lead such life."

The next day the rich man again came and met the cobbler. He gave him fifty thousand taka and said, "Keep this money and remove your suffering." The cobbler was surprised and did not take it at first. The rich man told him that he could use the money in times of need.Taking the money the cobbler thanked the man  but a new thinking took hold of the cobbler. He did not find any safe place to keep the money. He dug a hole in his hut and kept it there but he always thought that his money could be stolen anytime. So, he could not sleep at night and lost his peace of mind. Early in the morning he took the money and returned it to the rich man. Thus he could realize  that money cannot bring happiness because happiness lies in contentment.
